Choosing A Domain Name...
The more memorable your domain name is, the more likely it is
that people will remember it and find your web site. Search
engines also look at your domain name to determine what your
site is about.
Use words that reflect your type of business
A domain name that contains a keyword related to your
business is ideal. For example, if you are a trumpet player
living in Chicago and want to use your site to promote yourself
as a musician, chicagotrumpet.com
or chicagotrumpet.pro would
be great choices for a domain name.
Dot what?
If you will be using your site to promote a business, look
for a domain name with the three-letter extension .com, .net,
.biz, or .pro.
- .com is typically owned by commercial enterprises
- .org is suppose to be reserved for non-profit and
political organizations
- .edu is for educational institutions
- .mil is for the military
- .gov is for the government
- .net is also for commercial enterprises
- .biz is for businesses
- .pro is for professionals
Where to buy
There are many companies on the web that act as registrars
but are not ICANN approved. Some of these companies offer
reduced rates but secretly register domain names to themselves,
rather than to you. Because of this, you should be sure the
company you choose is an official ICANN registrar such as Name
Secure or GoDaddy.
