Preparing for embarkation, the unit was transferred by rail to Fort Dix, New Jersey on September 1, 1943.
September 3 — I'm sitting in different surroundings tonight. They say nothing is definite now. Last night there was a terrific rain storm. I woke and let the front and side of our tent down and fixed the flap on the front. All day it has been terribly cold and they say it is likely to stay this way for a week or two. No heat in tents and last night showers were like ice but it had to be done. They are halfway warm tonight, though.
September 4 — Having a clothing and equipment check today. It's still cold. I imagine here is where we must leave each other for a few months. Nothing has been said, only a general opinion and from personal observation. I do want to go, Honey, but I don't want to leave you.
The men were told to ship all personal effects by the 1st of October. All organizational markings on their clothes and equipment were to be removed.
